Second Twin, First Twin • Jessica Kehinde Ngo
Second Twin, First Twin depicts twinship through the eyes of an awkward, Nigerian-American girl who is
not only trying to figure out what it means to be a twin, but also attempting to understand her role as a
first generation American. The book uses twin mythology from Nigeria and other countries around the
globe to investigate the uniqueness of twin bonds and the significance of being a Nigerian twin growing
up in the United States. Though a memoir, Second Twin is held together by a strong narrative voice and
reads more like a novel than a typical autobiographical work. It combines elements of humor, myth, and
narrative that will hold reader interest. It is also narrated by a self-conscious, indecisive, introverted girl
who, by the end of the book, has blossomed into womanhood.

Jessica Kehinde Ngo, a native of Bakersfield, California, she to studied Creative Writing at Pepperdine
University. After graduating in 2006, she entered the Master of Professional Writing program at the
University of Southern California and wrote this book as her graduate thesis.
